Everton accused of spending big money to become average as 'scandalous' defending is slammed

Everton's defending at Burnley has been branded as being “scandalous” by a former Premier League manager who believes the Blues have squandered a fortune in the transfer market to be left with a mediocre side.

Marco Silva's team slipped to a fourth consecutive defeat on Saturday as they went down 1-0 to a goal by Jeff Hendrick at Burnley after captain Seamus Coleman was sent off.

Harry Redknapp, who has managed West Ham United, Portsmouth, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and QPR in the top flight, delivered a damning verdict for Everton's positioning for Burnley's match-winner, with Hendrick left completely unmarked at the back post to score.

On the Blues defending from set-pieces, Redknapp told BT Sport : “Well, that's just scandalous marking.

“We talk about great coaches, they have all the equipment in the world, they are all looking at their iPads, sitting on the touchline.

“We used to write it on the wife's shopping list. On the back of the shopping list about set-plays. “Who hasn't organised them to go and pick up? Everybody has a job. When you are a coach and manager, them players have to know what they're doing from set-plays.”

The miserable showing leaves Everton with just seven points from their opening eight Premier League games and following Newcastle United's 1-0 win over Manchester United, they dropped into the relegation zone.

Given the talent within the squad, it appears to be significant under-achievement but Redknapp, 72, believes that Goodison Park chiefs have not identified the right kind of individuals with their transfer policy.

He added: “I don't think they have recruited well.

“They have spent big money and they look a very average team. Very average team. I don't really see where they are going. They aren't certainly going forward.”
