Everton 1 Arsenal 0: Phil Jagielka dents Gunners' Premier League top four bid

Arsenal were dealt a blow in the race for a top-four finish after succumbing to a 1-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park.

Phil Jagielka's first Premier League goal in two years gave the hosts the lead after 10 minutes and after a dismal second-half performance, Arsenal fell to a sixth away defeat of the season.

Arsenal coach Unai Emery made two changes from the 2-0 win over Newcastle, bringing in Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mohammed Elneny for Alex Iwobi and Aaron Ramsey.

The Gunners looked as if they would start from where they off when Mkhitaryan sent Alexandre Lacazette through on goal. Kurt Zouma came flying in with a clumsy challenge and took out his compatriot in the penalty area, yet escaped punishment from referee Kevin Friend.

After a sluggish start, Everton began to grow with confidence and soon found themselves in the lead.

Lucas Digne launched a long throw into the box and Dominic Calvert-Lewin rose above everyone to nod it downwards. Arsenal failed to clear and it fell to Jagielka, who stabbed home from close range.

It capped a whirlwind afternoon for the veteran defender, who was only brought into the starting line-up 15 minutes before kick-off after Michael Keane was taken ill.

Calvert-Lewin was proving to be a handful for Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi, and the former was booked for tugging back the striker, meaning he will miss the next two games through suspension.

Arsenal's struggles were highlighted by the fact they had failed to register a shot on target and it was no real surprise to see Aaron Ramsey and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang come on at half time.

The Welshman had an immediate impact and should have scored just five minutes after coming on, volleying over with the goal wide open after an error from Jordan Pickford.

Everton should have doubled their lead on the hour mark when Bernard went clean through on goal with Leno but the Brazilian fluffed his lines.

The game became stretched as both sides chased the game-changing goal, with Mkhitaryan going close with a curling effort and Sigurdsson and Richarlison each missing the chance to put the game beyond doubt.

But Arsenal never really looked like scoring as the game fizzled out as Emery's men watched their top four hopes take a massive hit with just six games remaining.
