Everton 0-0 Tottenham: Antonio Conte’s side earn point with Mason Holgate shown red late on

Antonio Conte’s Premier League return finished goalless as Everton and Tottenham played out a draw after a dramatic second-half at Goodison Park.

The hosts were the more likely to earn all three points, but VAR denied them a penalty in the second-half after Richarlison had initially been awarded one.

Mason Holgate was sent off late on but Everton held on, and the result leaves Tottenham in ninth heading into the international break.

It was a first-half largely lacking in quality, but Spurs managed to carve out the two best opportunities.

Sergio Reguilon’s cross was met at the far post by Emerson Royal, but he couldn’t keep his header down.

Then on the verge of half-time, Harry Kane drifted out wide and put in a wonderful ball, but Reguilon could only divert his half-volley over the bar on the stretch.

The match burst into life midway through the second-half, when Everton won a penalty after Hugo Lloris brought down Richarlison.

However, referee Chris Kavanagh overturned his decision, much to the fury of an incensed home crowd.

Things threatened to boil over in the following minutes, with Richarlison and Cristian Romero both going into the book.

Giovanni Lo Celso very nearly won it with two minutes remaining but his effort from outside the box struck the post, before Holgate saw red for catching Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg high.
