Everett Golson considering transfer from Notre Dame: report

Jan. 05--Notre Dame senior quarterback Everett Golson inquired about a potential transfer to LSU after Malik Zaire, who backed up Golson most of the season, started the Irish's 31-28 victory over the Tigers in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30, according to a report in the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Golson, who told Irish Illustrated after the bowl game he is on track to graduate after the spring semester, would be eligible to play immediately next season, per the NCAA's fifth-year transfer rules.

Golson has a year of eligibility remaining after sitting out his first year at Notre Dame. He intends to graduate after this spring semester from Notre Dame.

After the story surfaced, Golson tweeted: "Don't believe everything you hear."

Per the report, LSU would need a waiver from the SEC to allow Golson to play because Golson sat out the 2013 season while serving an academic suspension. A school source said there have been initial inquiries or paperwork between Golson and Notre Dame regarding a potential transfer.

Don't expect a clean resolution soon because Golson needs that spring semester to graduate. By attempting to transfer now, Golson would put himself in jeopardy of missing spring practices, because he would have to remain at Notre Dame to graduate.

People close to Golson could be testing the waters for a potential transfer because by announcing a transfer now, Golson would close the door on possibly winning back the fluid quarterback job and would miss a chance to develop and hone his game in spring practices. It wouldn't benefit Notre Dame to give reps in practice to someone who has announced he would leave after the semester ends.

The source added the job is still up in the air and that Zaire's start and performance against LSU is not an indication that Zaire has won the job.
