This might be a bit out of left field, but do you like golf? Much to my grandpa's chagrin, I could never get into it. Maybe it's because he tried to get me on board when I was in the single digits and I had too much energy; I don't know.
Luckily, though, it seems John McGuinness is a guy who will happily try new things, even though he's clearly got one rather major thing that he seems to love most of all. So with that in mind, you really should watch this interview if you're a John McGuinness fan, an IOMTT fan in general, or just curious to know a bit more about the inner workings of TT racers, the TT experience, and what it takes to do what these guys do.
Because it isn't for our entertainment that they do this, though of course it is entertaining for those of us who watch and enjoy it, and especially those who descend upon the Isle in their hordes every single year for the event. No, it's about much more than that. There's a drive, an enjoyment, a need that must be sated.
Maybe it takes such an utterly tranquil environment, much like this golf course, to really make it possible to talk about all this stuff in-depth. Then again, it seems like McGuinness is one of those racers who's unusually forthcoming in his interviews in general, and definitely not the one-word-answer kind of guy. He's got stories, and he's keen to share them.
In this chat, you'll learn a bit about some of his superstitions (just about every racer has them; not every racer always talks about them), close calls on the course and what went through his head, as well as one of the biggest questions of them all: How does a TT rider make a living, anyway?
These aren't the only questions asked or answered, but they're some of the more interesting ones to look forward to. By now, you probably know whether you're going to watch this, so I'd suggest that you give it a go if you've gotten this far. As McPint himself says, it's a rare thing to have a corner on the TT course named after yourself, and rarer still for it to happen while you're still alive to enjoy it.
