The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for thunderstorms and damaging winds for the Central West Slopes and Plains, South West Slopes, Riverina and Lower Western Forecast Districts.

The Bureau warned damaging winds and heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding in the warning areas throughout Friday afternoon and weekend.

Meteorologist at the Bureau Alex Majchrowski said the system was a slow moving trough and travelling east.

He said there was a chance the system would reach the ACT but that it was unlikely for the system to hit Canberra before 7pm or 8pm.
