Evening Standard Comment: Stop the tube strike and keep our city moving

Londoners are bracing themselves for massive disruption next week, as the threat of a Tube strike by RMT workers hangs over the city.

The dispute surrounds a change in rostering arrangements that has brought dedicated part-time night Tube drivers into the general pool of drivers. Union Aslef has agreed to the changes.

We know Tube drivers performed sterling work over the last 18 months, carrying on to help other key workers do their jobs and keep the city afloat.

Yet it is now vital that our Tube network — the crucial artery that will drive London’s great recovery — is not blocked by industrial action. Indeed, there will be little need for a Night Tube if we curtail the economic recovery.

TfL has suffered enormous losses due to Covid and there is not simply one way to avoid difficult decisions. But TfL also notes that the changes will not lead to a single job lost. We urge both TfL and the RMT to come together to avert a strike and keep our city moving.
