Evening Standard Comment: Prince Harry’s openness on mental health will help many others

Credit once again must go to Prince Harry for his bravery in speaking out about the “shame” some people feel when a family member reveals they are suffering from mental health issues.

To those who think people born into wealth or privilege should not complain about their lives, we would only say a person’s income or status is no protection against trauma.

By talking openly, the duke is helping many others suffering in silence and the many families who do not possess a shared language with which to discuss their feelings.

We have made progress when it comes to addressing mental health issues but we still have a long way to go. That is in part why we launched our Young London SOS campaign, in response to the mental health crisis facing young people, which the pandemic has only made more acute.

Harry’s comments should neither be swept under the carpet nor be viewed as the latest salvo between warring royals. It is a chance for us as a society to grapple with an issue we are sadly not yet close to properly addressing.

Trophy hopes

While we accept they may not necessarily have the support of all Londoners, we would like to wish Chelsea good luck as they take on Manchester City in tomorrow evening’s Champions League Final.

Here’s hoping they bring home the capital’s second trophy.
