Evening Standard Comment: Making our streets safer is up to all of us

Making our streets safer is up to all of us

The reports that remains have been found during the search for Sarah Everard are a profoundly sad moment. While the reality is that shocking crimes such as this  are rare, they understandably grab ahold of the national psyche.

Brave women took to social media last night to share their stories of harassment, or simply not feeling safe on our streets. Women should not have to be concerned about how they dress, or fake phone calls from friends, or step into a shop, as they walk home at night.

Ultimately, the onus should not be on women. It is incumbent on all of us, from the police to the vast majority of law-abiding citizens, and in particular men, to actively contribute to a safe atmosphere.
