Evening Standard Comment: Londoners want to go electric, but need charging points

Electric car charging

An exclusive poll for the Standard reveals that Britons are ready to go green in a bid to reduce our carbon emissions, with 57 per cent of adults saying they think people are in favour of switching to electric vehicles, compared with 26 per cent who took the opposite view.

Cost is inevitably a factor, as we can see with the extension of the ultra-low emission zone, which is likely to see 530,000 drivers facing the £12.50 daily fee. But for those wishing to switch to an electric vehicle, price is not the only issue. Internal combustion engine cars would be far less popular if petrol stations were infrequently dotted around the city.

The same logic applies to electric cars and charging infrastructure. We need a charging point revolution to make the transition a reality. Not only are there insufficient numbers of chargers, but we are lacking the joined-up approach to get there.

It will take boroughs, City Hall, central government and the private sector working far more closely together to roll out the charging points Londoners want and need.
