Evening Standard Comment: Knife Crime Prevention Orders a chance to act early on London’s violent crime

The horrific violence and continued bloodshed in London must serve as a watershed moment. In the long-term we need more police on the streets and to see through the public health approach to fighting knife crime. But terrified parents and their children are desperate for action now.

That is why we support the Government’s use of knife crime prevention orders to further crack down on those carrying dangerous weapons, while also providing a range of alternative activities, including educational courses, sports club referrals and drug rehabilitation orders.

These court orders can be used for people as young as 12, because the earlier the intervention, the better. The Met too has welcomed its introduction, which crucially can work alongside present police powers to tackle knife crime, such as the existing offence of possessing a bladed article in public without good reason.

The hope is that if successful, this pilot scheme, which was rolled out across the capital this week, could be introduced in England and Wales for other forces to use. Early intervention remains key. As is a Mayor and Met showing they are gaining a grip on the crisis.

Ultimately, we must take all action necessary to lead young people in the capital away from criminal activity and provide them with the opportunities — and safety — we all want for our children.
