Evening Standard Comment: End Covid travel chaos at border

We welcome the Government’s decision not to add further confusion to Covid travel rules, something we called for yesterday.

Yet more travel categories would breed greater uncertainty and likely lead to a cratering in demand for listed countries, as holidaymakers fear they could turn red at short notice.

Such an eventuality would lead to the high cost and inconvenience of hotel quarantine for 10 days.

But issues with international travel remain widespread. It is all well and good to scrap the proposed amber watchlist, but there can be few worse adverts for holidays and for foreign tourists coming to Britain than quarter-mile long queues at Heathrow.

The logic of travel restrictions is to prevent new Covid variants from entering Britain. The effect of this sensible position should not be endless lines — without social distancing — at airports among the fully vaccinated.

Whether it is issues with e-gates or staff absences, this chaos at the border cannot go on.

And with more people expected to fly off over August, this issue needs urgently sorting out.
