Evening Standard Comment: Bring back the Night Tube

Thousands of people have supported a petition to bring back the night Tube (Yui Mok/PA)

Tens of thousands of Londoners have signed a petition calling on the Mayor to reinstate the Night Tube, as women are forced to consider the safest ways of getting home in the wake of the horrific murders of Sabina Nessa and Sarah Everard.

The reason for its continued absence is simple: cost. So as it negotiates a new deal with TfL, the Government should set money aside to bring the Night Tube back.

If Boris Johnson is serious about action to keep women safe, its reinstatement must be a priority.

Return of glamour

Last night the joy was palpable as, after a god-awful terrifying year, the London Film Festival kicked off (a fashionable hour late, and with a red carpet queue that snaked around the Royal Festival Hall) with the glittering première of Londoner Jeymes Samuel’s black Western The Harder They Fall.

It thrilled the excitable audience — though not as much as the assembled stars, including Regina King, Hackney’s own Idris Elba and Jay-Z, who arrived with his wife Beyoncé.

Queen B doesn’t turn up to the opening of an envelope; this is the surest sign yet that London’s global place as a crucible of culture is as strong as ever.
