Evening Standard backs Power Up The North campaign

More than £4 billion has already been spent on the HS2 fast link between London and Birmingham (Picture: HS2)

The Evening Standard today backed a campaign to encourage the next prime minister to spread the UK’s wealth beyond London.

More than 30 newspapers including the Manchester Evening News and the Yorkshire Post have thrown their weight behind the Power Up The North campaign, which calls for the Northern Powerhouse project to be “rebooted”.

It was set up in 2014 to attract investment to the North and develop transport links.

The HS2 and HS3 rail lines are seen as crucial to ensuring the UK economy benefits the entire country.

The Standard says in an editorial today : “It’s hugely in the interests of the capital that our economy is more balanced, and that communities who have felt left behind have a share in our joint future.

"We have to get away from the arrogance that nothing that happens outside the M25 matters.”
