Evanston man critical after rear-ending semi at same intersection of fatal crash last week in Gurnee

In the second major crash at the Gurnee intersection in less than a week, a 26-year-old Evanston man was critically hurt Sunday at Skokie Highway and Riverside Drive.

The man crashed his Buick about 8:40 p.m. into the rear of a semitrailer as it approached the intersection at northbound Route 41 and Route 21, Gurnee police said in a statement.

He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said. The semi driver was uninjured.

Gurnee police said the investigation in ongoing.

Six days earlier, a 70-year-old woman died in a separate crash at the same intersection.

Jolanta Kubala initially crashed her Mitsubishi Endeavor into the rear of a Nissan SUV about a half mile away, but continued driving until she entered the intersection at Skokie Highway and Riverside Drive, police said. She crashed into a turning semi and died later at a hospital. An autopsy ruled she died from injuries of the crash.
