Evangelos Marinakis and Nottingham Forest handed January transfer windfall after World Cup decision

Nottingham Forest are set to receive a cash sum from FIFA following ten player's participation in the World Cup over the last couple of weeks.

It was revealed by FIFA back in October that the organisation will give a payment to clubs for allowing players to take part in the tournament during the season. The payment is made through the Club Benefits programme and will see sides be paid a fee of around 8,202 pounds for every day that players were away from the club for the competition, including official preparation time.

FIFA did though state that the compensation will be paid to all clubs for which the footballer has played in the two years prior to the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Including players currently out on loan, Forest had a total of ten players representing their countries in the tournament. However, none have made it past the round of 16 stage, meaning that the Reds now know how much they will earn from the Club Benefits programme.

While there were three Forest players in the Wales side, only one in Brennan Johnson will see the Reds get the full 131,232 pounds for the 16 days they spent at the competition after going out in the group stage. After signing in the summer, both Neco Williams and Wayne Hennessey payments will have to be split with Liverpool, Burnley and Crystal Palace.

It means Forest will get 65,616 pounds for Williams and 43,744 pounds for Hennessey. That totals 240,592 pounds for the three Wales players.

Two other Forest players did get to the next stage of the competition, with Cheikhou Kouyate's Senegal losing against England in the last 16 tie on Saturday. After being away for 21 days, Forest and West Ham will split the money, meaning the Reds will get a fee of around 86,172 pounds.

Remo Freuler is another summer signing who made it to the round of 16 stage. His Switzerland team lost to 6-1 to Portugal in the first knockout stages.

Forest would again have to split the fee with his former club Atalanta, meaning they will get around 94,323 pounds.

While it's not clear how and if the money is split for players out on loan, presuming that the parent club is paid by FIFA, Forest were also able to earn money from players who are on temporary deals away from the club. However, this money is again having to be split with any club who Forest have signed the player from in the last two years.

Loanees Ethan Horvath, Brandon Aguilera, Mohamed Drager, Richie Laryea and Hwang Ui-Jo all took part in the competition. Both Horvath and Hwang reaching the last 16 stage with USA and South Korea.

If the money is paid to the parent club, then those players will have earned Forest a total of 389,595 pounds. Added to the money from players at the club, the Reds are set to earn around 810,682 pounds from FIFA from the competition.

That total however is not taking into account any money that the club may get from previous players who took part in the competition, with the Reds receiving a split from any player who played for the club in the last two years.

The windfall could come in handy for Steve Cooper as he looks to add to his squad in the upcoming transfer window. There is now just a matter of weeks left before the window opens again.
