Evacuation of East Kilbride distribution centre linked to bomb discovery in Northern Ireland

The evacuation of a Sainsbury's distribution centre in East Kilbride earlier this week has been linked to the discovery of a bomb in Northern Ireland.

Officers attended the distribution centre in Hurlawcrook Road, East Kilbride at 2am on Tuesday (February 4) amid reports of a suspicious item.

Following the evacuation of the site and a subsequent search by specially trained officers, Police Scotland confirmed nothing of a suspicious nature was found.

It is believed that the evacuation and search were linked to the discovery of an explosive device attached to a heavy goods vehicle in Lurgan on Tuesday by police in Northern Ireland.

The device may have been intended for a Brexit day attack, to be detonated on a ferry travelling to Scotland on January 31 - the date the UK left the EU.

A police spokeswoman told Glasgow Live: "We can confirm officers attended a distribution centre in Hurlawcrook Road, East Kilbride around 2am on Tuesday, February 4.

"Following a thorough search by specially trained officers, nothing of a suspicious nature was found. As a precaution, a number of staff members were evacuated to a nearby building whilst enquiries and searches were carried out."
