Evacuation of East Kilbride depot linked to bomb discovery in Northern Ireland

The evacuation of Sainsbury's distribution centre in East Kilbride has been linked to the discovery of a bomb in Northern Ireland.

Specialist officers raced to the scene after reports of a suspicious item at Hurlawcrook Road at 2am on Tuesday with plant workers evacuated and roads closed off.

But police later confirmed nothing suspicious was discovered.

Now it has emerged the bomb scare was linked to an investigation by police in Northern Ireland after a device - which may have been intended for a Brexit day attack - was attached to a lorry in County Armagh.

The device may have been intended to detonate on a ferry travelling to Scotland on January 31 - the date the UK left the EU.

A Police Scotland Spokeswoman said "We can confirm officers attended a distribution centre in Hurlawcrook Road, East Kilbride around 2am on Tuesday, February 4.

"Following a thorough search by specially trained officers, nothing of a suspicious nature was found. As a precaution, a number of staff members were evacuated to a nearby building whilst enquiries and searches were carried out."
