Fire crews raced to the scene of a blaze at a Glasgow hospital after a patient deliberately started a fire in the early hours of this morning.

Flames broke out at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital on Govan Road shortly after 6.30am today.

Five fire engines were on the scene to tackle the blaze on Ward 6C of the hospital.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service report there were no casualties.

A spokesman said: “SFRS was alerted at 6.29am on Tuesday, June 18 to reports of a fire within Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

“Operations Control mobilised five fire engines on ward 6c where crews extinguished a small fire.

“There were no casualties."

Speaking to Glasgow Live, an NHS Spokesperson confirmed that the fire was deliberately started by a patient in the hospital.

They said: "Thanks to the quick reaction of our staff a fire started deliberately by a patient in their room at the QEUH was quickly extinguished.

"The fire service was called to ensure the area was safe but as a precautionary measure we have temporarily moved five patients while our estates staff assess the damage.  We expect these patients to be returned later today."
