Evacuated residents in Carlton describe fire that ripped through two homes

Carlton residents who were evacuated after two homes caught fire have described what happened.

Five fire crews - a total of 25 firefighters - including an aerial ladder platform, were used to tackle the blaze, in Morley Road, off Porchester Road.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue service were called at around 3.30pm, and were on the scene 'within minutes'.

One resident said he had been walking past and noticed the smoke, before seeing the flames taking hold, and immediately dialled 999.

The incident commander, Andy Lindley, confirmed that: "thankfully, no one has been injured, and we have actually rescued 4 kittens from the affected property."

Mr Lindley added that the fire had reached the roof area of one property, and had spread to a neighbouring house.

Hazardous Area Response Team called to incident and road closed causing delays to buses

He said: "Unfortunately one of the houses has been severely damaged and the fire has ripped through the roof."

For protection, residents in the road were evacuated and looked after by officers at Nottinghamshire Police.

The area was cordoned off and there was no public access until around 6.30pm.

Roger Widdowson, 50, made the 999 call after seeing the blaze take hold.

The architect said: “I smelt smoke as I was walking back to my house, but thought it was a bonfire.

“But then I went to talk to a neighbour, and turned around to see loads of smoke and then saw flames. They had really taken hold.

“I called 999, panicking, just thinking about preservation of life. [The crews] were here in minutes.

"There was a superb response, they were very professional and we are very fortunate that no one was hurt."

Mohammed Hanif, 60, a taxi driver, added: “Police and fire did a great job - it’s a good system and despite the circumstances, I felt safe.

“We saw the fire, it was fierce and it went to the roof. Five more minutes and it could have been a lot worse.”

Resident Adrian Fry, 56, added: “I was in my house when I heard a bang like an explosion but I thought it was a car crash outside.

“I came out and saw the side of one property on fire. Within two minutes the garage was gone.

“Someone had already called the fire service and they were here in five minutes."
