Eva Simpson: Women are the heroes when it comes to Brexit

When they come to make Brexit: The Movie, who should be given the starring roles?

There are any number of villains to choose from – David Cameron who started the whole awful thing, Boris “the Hulk” Johnson who was told on Tuesday he’d illegally shut down Parliament, Nigel Farage and his immigration scare stories, some might even say Jeremy Corbyn for his lacklustre performance in the 2016 Referendum campaign.

But what about the heroes?

At times it’s felt like they’ve been pretty thin on the ground.

But this week’s historic events have been a real reminder that there are genuine heroes or rather heroines at work because women have emerged as the true stars of the Brexit show.

Gina Miller, who led the challenge against the Government, is a one-woman force of nature who’s made sure that not even prime ministers can declare themselves above the law.

I’ve met and done some work for Gina and, believe me, she doesn’t do any of this for fame or money.

As is often mentioned, she has enough of that.

Life for her is having two security teams 24/7, having to regularly move offices, hate mail – usually racist – pouring in daily and death threats to her and her family.

Faced with all that, many people would have walked away from the fight by now.

I asked her once why she bothers and she said it was because she wanted to be able to sleep at night.

“Whenever I see things are wrong and I know I could make a difference, I can’t ignore it,” she said.

She’s driven by the need to do the right thing, and we’re all the better for it.

As a black woman – she was born in Guyana in the Caribbean and that’s what she calls herself – and a working mother, she really is an inspiration.

Honorary heroine mentions must go to Joanna Cherry, the SNP MP who led the case in the Scottish courts, Lady Hale, the northern, state-school educated leader of the Supreme Court, and the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, who can’t have slept in weeks.

Imagine what it would be like if more of our leaders were cut from the same cloth?

I’m sure we wouldn’t be in half the mess we are now.
