Euston chaos as 'do not travel' warning issued with signal fault wrecking travel plans for thousands

One of London’s busiest train stations has been plunged into chaos as thousands of people attempt to travel for the weekend.

Trains on the West Coast Main Line ground to a halt during the rush hour after a major signalling fault in the Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent area.

It left Euston station packed as passengers starting their weekends were left with their travel plans wrecked.

A “do not travel” warning has been issued by Avanti West Coast for all routes between London and Manchester, Liverpool, Holyhead and Preston.

Euston issued a warning the station was “very busy” with pictures and videos shared online showing crowds in the station.

Crowd control efforts have been employed with officers from British Transport Police and staff from Network Rail manning the main entrance and exit to the station.

Lines have since reopened but some services may still be trains cancelled or delayed by up to 90 minutes.

Avanti West Coast services between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly, Chester, Edinburgh, Glasgow Central, Holyhead, and Liverpool Lime Street remain affected with Avanti advising people not to travel for the rest of Friday.

A notce on the national rail webiste says: “If you do travel, trains and stations are expected to be much busier than usual. At London Euston you may have to wait to access the platforms.

“Tickets dated for today, 21 November, can be used on Avanti West Coast services tomorrow.”

London Northwestern Railway services between Birmingham New Street and Liverpool Lime Street, and London Euston, Stafford and Crewe have also been affected.

Several other train operators and routes across the country have also been affected, including CrossCountry services between Manchester Piccadilly and Birmingham New Street, as well as Northern services between Stoke-on-Trent and Manchester Piccadilly.
