Eurovision 2023 Leeds bid causes fans to 'lose their minds'

Leeds is the “best surrogate host” for Eurovision next year according to people reacting to news that the city could host the iconic song contest.

It was announced earlier today (Friday) the BBC is currently in talks with The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to potentially host the competition in 2023 after it was decided it couldn’t go ahead in Ukraine due to the ongoing war.

It comes after folklore rap group Kalush Orchestra, representing Ukraine, won the competition in Turin, Italy last month and it is tradition for the winning country to host the event the following year.

Leeds, which is preparing for the Leeds 2023, a year celebrating our city's culture, has now been put forward as one of the possible cities where Eurovision could be held next year. If the city were to host the music competition, it would be held at The First Direct Arena.

Confirming the news, Councillor James Lewis, leader of Leeds City Council and Councillor Jonathan Pryor, executive member for economy and culture, issued a joint statement saying "it would be an honour" to host the competition on behalf of Ukraine.
