Eurovision 2022: Who won last year and where UK finished

With Eurovision 2022 grand final just hours away, we've taken a look back at who won the European singing extravaganza last year.

After there being no contest in 2020, the huge event was back with a bang in 2021. There were classic Eurovision moments throughout, not least when Germany blew people's minds with Jendrick and a dancing hand flipping its middle finger to millions of viewers, Wales Online reports.

The competition began with twenty six countries, and was held in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The UK automatically applies for a place in the Eurovision grand final as it is part of the "Big 5", which includes original members of the European Broadcasting Union or EBU.

Other members are France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. As well as the Big 5, the host country also goes automatically through to the final each year.

Eurovision 2021's winner was Italy. Måneskin competed on behalf of the nation, collecting a huge 540 points with their song Zitti E Buoni.

The UK's entry, James Newman, received zero points with his song Embers. It's the second time in the history of the competition that the UK has not gained a single point.

The first time we received "nul points" was in 2003, when Scouse duo Jemini performed their song, Cry Baby.

After winning Eurovision last year, the band went on a European tour and performed at a number of summer festivals. Måneskin's eleventh single, Supermodel, will be released on Friday (May 13) and is set to be performed at the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 held the following day.
