Eurovision 2019: Who is UK's entry Michael Rice and what are his odds?

The Eurovision 2019 final takes place this weekend - but how much do you know about the UK’s entrant?

Michael Rice, 21, from Hartlepool, Durham, will sing Bigger Than Us when he appears on stage in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Saturday evening (May 18).

The honour of representing the UK fell to Rice after he won a public vote among viewers of the Eurovision: You Decide programme, aired in February.

Has he been on TV before?

Talent show fans might have seen Rice on ITV singing contest The X Factor, on which he appeared in 2014.

But the singer is better known as the first-ever winner of BBC competition All Together Now, presented by Spice Girl Geri Halliwell and comedian Rob Beckett.

That victory was secured by performances of Proud Mary by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Crazy in Love by Beyoncé and Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen.

Who are his own musical heroes?

Rice has previously cited Adele, Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera and Stevie Wonder as among his inspirations, explaining that he enjoys a combination of pop and soul.

What are his odds of winning Eurovision?

Not very likely, it would seem.

Bookies have him priced at odds including 150-1, 100-1 and 80-1, while the Netherlands (available at 9/4) and Sweden (4-1) are among the favourites.

So the chances of Rice becoming the UK’s sixth winner - and first since Katrina and the Waves in 1997 - are perhaps rather remote.

Last year’s UK entrant, SuRie, finished 24th out of 26 with the song Storm.
