Eurovision 2019: UK entry Michael Rice claims it's 'about time' we had a good song

Eurovision 2019's UK entry this year has declared it's "about time" the country had a good song.

The UK has famously performed poorly on Eurovision, not having taken the top spot for 22 years.

Now, Hartlepool resident Michael Rice, 22, has placed the blame with the acts of previous years – which have included SuRie, Blue, Bonnie Tyler and Electro Velvet.

Rice will be hoping to top the scores of those before him by singing a power ballad entitled Bigger Than Us, in honour of his late father.

The singer previously appeared on The X Factor in 2014, but was eliminated at the boot camp stage.

He then appeared on BBC's All Together Now, where he ended up bagging the top spot.

Despite having high hopes of doing better than previous acts when he hits the stage, Rice told Lorraine recently that he is under no illusion he's likely to take the win.

"We have to be realistic," he said.

"But I’m going in there with a winner’s head on, either way, to make sure that we get on the left-hand side of the board if we can."

"I’m just going to go in there and belt out that song, sing my heart out and hope for the best," he added.

Israel are set to host this year's competition in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Saturday night, after they reigned victorious with contestant Netta last year.

*The Eurovision Song Contest will air on BBC1 at 8pm.
