Eurostar back on track after cable theft causes huge disruption to London-Paris trains

Eurostar services have resumed after a morning of chaos following the theft of cable near Lille in northern France.

Most trains between London St Pancras and Paris Gare du Nord on Wednesday morning were delayed or cancelled.

Passengers continued to face delays in the early afternoon.

It comes after two people were killed in separate incidents on the railway lines between Paris and Lille, causing major disruption on Tuesday evening.

In a fresh statement issued around 2.30pm on Tuesday, Eurostar said trains had resumed “as normal” but some delays may still be possible.

It said: “Due to a cable theft on the high-speed line (LGV Nord) near Lille this morning, Eurostar services between London and Brussels/Paris have been experiencing disruption since the beginning of the day, leading to extended journey times.

“Full repairs are now completed and traffic resumed as normal at 1pmBST/2pmCET. Some delays can still be expected until the end of the day.

“Customers have been contacted directly with updates and available options, and Eurostar is advising those due to travel today to postpone their journey with free exchanges and refunds available.

“We’re very sorry for the continued disruption and the impact this is having on our customers. Our teams are working hard to support customers in the stations.”

Frustrated passengers had reported being stranded for up to seven hours as they waited to hear when they will be able to make their journey across the Channel.

Those affected by the delays have been advised they can claim compensation if they are delayed by more than 60 minutes.

One passenger reported being stranded in Brussels with no information being provided as to when the next train to London would be departing.

They were told they could take “whatever train” was departing to their destination but warned that there was no guarantee of a seat.

Those affected by the delays vented their frustration online.

One passenger said on social media: “My disabled niece had no choice to sleep on the floor of the train station Gare du Nord, Paris last night. Due to the cancellation of trains going to London, as all reasonable priced hotels weren't available. Her birthday holiday ruined.”

Another said last night: “For the passengers stuck at Garde Du Nord on the trains, the supplies of food and drinks are running out, air con is not working, coffee machine broken as is the card machine!! Total joke.”

One passenger desperately trying to get back to London from Paris to catch a coach to Glastonbury said: ”It was very hot and chaotic at Gare du Nord last night with not much direction from staff. They just made the same announcement over and over again. There were school trips, families and commuter stranded and eventually all the trains were cancelled.”

One couple, who live just outside of Sydney, Australia, said they had just arrived and were hoping to get a 1pm train.

“We were booked to go at 11 but we were told a cable had been stolen, so our travel agent has booked us on to the 1 o’clock.

“I’m hoping we get (to Belgium) because we have Flanders Fields booked tomorrow and if not I’m hoping the travel insurance covers the cost of everything we’d miss.

“It’s quite stressful but you just have to wait and see what happens.”

A family-of-three from the US were also hoping to get on the same train.

“We’ve not been delayed or cancelled on just yet. We keep checking our messages constantly.”
