European Testing Week: How to order a free postal HIV test in Wales during the pandemic

Taking place every year, European Testing week encourages health, community and policy institutions to increase HIV testing efforts.

Fast Track Cardiff & Vale has launched it's 'Do You Know?' social media campaign, aiming to increase HIV testing in Wales.

Fast Track Cardiff & Vale, along with other European cities on the initiative, are committed to removing HIV transmissions by 2030.

Here's some useful information on how you can order a free postal HIV test in Wales during European Testing Week.

How can I order a postal testing kit?

In Wales, postal tests are free to order to your home through Frisky Wales.

You can order a kit that will test for HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. Testing kits for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea are also available.

You must be 16 or over to order the test yourself. If you're under 16, contact your nearest health service.

How do I take the test?

Tests for HIV and Hepatitis require blood samples through a prick of the finger.

In your postal test, you will receive a small tube to store your blood sample, sterile wipe for cleaning the area and a lancet for pricking your finger.

Using the lancet, press against your little finger until it clicks and a droplet of blood forms. Gently begin 'milking' the finger and filling the tube to the line with blood.

Can I have a test any other way?

Yes, sexual health testing can be done in person at a sexual health clinic.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, you may have to book before attending the clinic.

The Terrence Higgins Trust also offers a rapid testing service by appointment only in Cardiff.

Tests can also be booked in with your local GP service.

What should I do once I get my results?

You will receive your results within two weeks of submitting your sample.

If you do not receive a call or text, it normally means the sample couldn't be tested. This could be due to not enough of the sample being sent.

If you are positive in any of your results, you will be contacted by the sexual health service in your area for confidential treatment and care.

If you need emotional support following a positive HIV test, The Terence Higgins Trust offers community forums, counselling and an immediate support phone line 0808 802 1221.
