European Super League: Thomas Tuchel trusts Chelsea FC ‘to make the right decisions’

Thomas Tuchel says he trusts Chelsea to “make the right decisions” amid the huge public backlash to their decision to sign up to a breakaway European Super League.

Chelsea are one of the 12 rebel clubs who have agreed to plans that have thrown European football into turmoil.

The Chelsea Supporters’ Trust have voiced their fury about the plans, saying: “This is a decision of greed to line the pockets of those at the top. Our members and football supporters across the world have experienced the ultimate betrayal.”

One of the first managers to comment on the new European Super League plans, Tuchel said on Monday: “I have known since yesterday. I am here to be in the hardest competition. That is why I came here, that is what I love.

“I do not get involved with the subjects around us. I trust my club to make the right decisions, I think it is too early to judge. My role is to be a coach and stay focused.

“I do not want to get involved in it [the reaction] because I do not think we know the details. I have known the general situation since yesterday.

“It is too early to judge it. There are way too many opinions out there. I am an employee of this club. I trust this club. I am not the right person to ask this.

“There are many very emotional reactions out there. I do not know enough to judge it.

“I was not involved, my players were not involved in this decision-making. We have the possibility to step back, not give our opinions and don’t lose our heads about this.”
