The breakaway European Super League looks to be over after a dramatic sequence of withdrawals from all six Premier League clubs involved led founder Andrea Agnelli to admit that it could no longer happen.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham all signed up to the controversial plans over the weekend, only for each club to pull out in quick succession on Tuesday night.
Atletico Madrid, AC Milan and Inter Milan have also now followed suit on Wednesday.
Those decisions came after the Super League announcement - which sent shockwaves throughout the world of sport - were universally condemned by players, managers, clubs, leagues, football authorities, pundits and even governments, royalty and prime ministers.
Fans demonstrated their power to affect real change with passionate protests against the Super League, with Chelsea supporters making their feelings crystal clear outside Stamford Bridge last night.
The Super League initially said they intended to “reshape” the controversial proposals, though Juventus chairman Agnelli has now admitted that it cannot happen.
Boris Johnson, meanwhile, has hailed the English exodus as the “right result”, with fan-led reviews of football ownership and potential competition law changes still on the table in order to try and protect the game in this country.
Liverpool owner John W Henry has apologised to fans and players for the club’s involvement in the Super League plans, while Arsenal also said sorry for a “mistake” and Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy expressed his regret over the “anxiety and upset” caused.
