Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham have all started procedures to pull out of the controversial plans having only been announced as founder members on Sunday.
Those withdrawals follow an enormous backlash against the Super League plans, with fans, players, managers, other clubs, football authorities and governments all united in their strong condemnation of what looked to be the biggest radical shake up of European football seen in decades.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has hailed the English clubs’ exodus as the “right result”, though overdue plans for reviews of football and potential changes to competition law still appear very much on the table in a bid to safeguard the future of the beautiful game.
The Super League, meanwhile, have confirmed that they aim to “reshape” the controversial plans, with AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid still seemingly involved for now.
On Wednesday morning, Liverpool owner John W Henry apologised for the club’s involvement in the saga, while Arsenal also said sorry to fans for a “mistake” and Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy expressed his regret at the “anxiety and upset” caused by the Super League.
