European Super League cloak and dagger operation laid bare as Milan director Paolo Maldini was left in the dark

Paolo Maldini insists even he wasn't told about the European Super League, despite being a director at Milan.

A group of 12 European clubs announced plans for a breakaway on Sunday, envisioning a 20 team league that would have 15 permanent members.

The plan has long been the dream of Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, with Barcelona joining their arch-rivals in the proposed breakway.

England's big six also got on board, as well as Italy's three biggest clubs Juventus, Milan and Inter.

But reaction was overwhelmingly negative and not just with fans.

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson made clear his opposition and insisted he had nothing to do with the decision to sign up.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and his players came out against the plan and by Tuesday it was dead.

Chelsea and Manchester City pulled out, triggering a domino effect to leave only Madrid and Barcelona officially committed to the project.

The Super League project caught players, fans and UEFA by disguise and the cloak-and-dagger nature of the move went even further.

Maldini, who is technical director at Milan, has revealed even he was not told of the plans by his fellow board members.

The club legend told Sky Italia: "I would like to make clear I was never involved in the discussions about the European Super League, I found out about it on Sunday like the rest of you.

"This is something that was decided at a higher level than mine.

"There's a bit of confusion on my part but that doesn't stop me apologising not only to Milan fans, but fans in general.

"Milan have always respected the principles of sport, it is something I feel I have to say.

"A director of a club in 2021 knows that revenues are important, and we need to ask ourselves questions about where we go.

"But certainly not changing the principles of sport which are made up of principles, of meritocracy."

Meanwhile Juventus have been given a dubious gift on the back of the Super League's collapse.

Italian TV show Striscia La Notizia 'awards' a small golden tapir statue each week to someone who has been notably embarrassed or defeated.

And ahead of the Serie A clash with Parma the programme delivered an enormous 'super tapir' on the back of a truck for president Andrea Agnelli.
