European rugby semi-finals and finals postponed but EPCR committed to completing competitions

European Rugby chiefs still hope to conclude the Heineken Champions Cup despite May’s semi-finals and final being among the latest sporting events to be postponed.

EPCR had already postponed the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup quarter-finals, which were due to be played next weekend, and have now called off the latter stages of each competition too.

The organisation said it remains committed to completing the tournaments.

On Monday, Harlequins became the latest Premiership club to announce that all players, coaches and staff would be taking a 25 per cent pay cut as they look to navigate choppy financial waters while games are not going ahead.

Premiership CEO Darren Childs expressed a desire to be “the first sport back on television” as they worked through how to reschedule the season, which is currently postponed until April 20.

Damian Hopley, CEO of the Rugby Players’ Association, told Standard Sport that “the health and wellbeing of our members and our fans is the no1 priority” in any rescheduling plans.

“Things are changing every day, we have gone into a lockdown period,” he said. “We are all hoping for a swift resolution here but there is a very real possibility that the current season is going to extend or indeed may have to be cancelled on the back of the government advice.”
