European rugby in turmoil as Scarlets caught up in mass postponements amid government restrictions

All European matches between French and UK clubs scheduled for Saturday and Sunday - including the Scarlets' clash with Bordeaux - have been postponed.

The rise in Covid-19 cases has led to the cancellation of a couple of matches already this weekend - with matters complicated further by travel measures imposed by the French Government.

There had been hope on Friday morning that matches would still be able to go ahead, but a meeting of the EPCR board has led to the postponement of all matches on Saturday and Sunday between UK and French sides - adding to the already cancelled clashes between Leinster and Montpellier and Racing 92 and Ospreys.

As a result, the Scarlets will once again not play this weekend - having forfeited last weekend's Champions Cup opener with Bristol. The intention is for these games to be replayed at a later date however - meaning they should still play Bordeaux at some point.

Any existing matches scheduled for Friday night - such as the Dragons' Challenge Cup fixture with Lyon - are still set to go ahead.

European Rugby's statement read: "Following a meeting of the EPCR Board today (Friday, 17 December) it has been decided that due to current exceptional circumstances, Round 2 matches in the Heineken Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup between French and UK clubs scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday are postponed.

"This is a consequence of new travel measures between the UK and France which are being introduced by the French Government.

"The Board received briefings from the three professional leagues which included updated information from the respective governments, however, there were insufficient assurances that these matches would not be at risk.

"All other Round 2 matches scheduled for this evening (Friday), and over the weekend, will go ahead as planned.

"EPCR will provide a further update as soon as practicable and will continue to liaise directly with all clubs, leagues and stakeholders."

Champions Cup postponements: Bath Rugby v Stade Rochelais, Sale Sharks v ASM Clermont Auvergne, Scarlets v Union Bordeaux-Bègles, Stade Toulousain v Wasps, Stade Francais Paris v Bristol Bears.

Challenge Cup postponements: Worcester Warriors v Biarritz Olympique, London Irish v CA Brive.
