European leaders to use D-Day commemorations to go to war with Donald Trump

Western leaders will use D-Day commemorations here this week to go to war with Donald Trump over his threats to collapse NATO.

Prime Minister Theresa May , German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and leaders of eight other member nations are expected to team up to confront the controversial US President.

Mr Trump is upset that only five of the 29 NATO nations – including us – spend two per cent of national income on defence. And he is threatening to pull out unless it changes.

The intervention during D-Day events comes as we host the biggest gathering of world leaders outside a formal summit since the 2012 Olympics.

The highlight of the 75th anniversary will be a military spectacle on Southsea Common, Hants, on Wednesday – the last day of Mr Trump’s state visit.

A source said: “Leaders will lunch, where they are expected to discuss the enduring importance of the Western alliance and the values that underpin it for our security and prosperity today.”

America pays two-thirds of the tab for NATO, set up in the Cold War to tackle Russia and Warsaw Pact nations.

He has said: “The US is paying for Europe’s protection. NATO countries must pay MORE, the US must pay LESS. Very unfair!”

Wednesday’s spectacular, with a Red Arrows and Spitfire flypast, will be opened by the Queen and Prince Charles.

The PM said: “It is right we reflect on and celebrate the cooperation that helped secure the freedom we cherish today.”

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift blasted Mr Trump’s stance on pro-LGBT laws.

The pop star, 29, wants fans to urge their senators to back the Equality Act, which was passed by the House of Representatives.

She said: “I reject the President’s stance that his administration ‘supports equal treatment’ but the Equality Act ‘in its current form is filled with poison pills that threaten to undermine parental and conscience rights’.”
