St Johnstone loan signing Reece Devine admits the attraction of European football adds even greater excitement to his move north.
The highly-rated Manchester United youth trained with his new team-mates on Friday and is keen to impress at McDiarmid Park.
Devine (19), a left-back who has been playing under-23 football, highlighted the importance of getting some first-team experience. And he is looking to help Saints navigate deep into European competition this year.
Saints’ Europa League third qualifying round tie is scheduled for August 5/12, with the opponent discovered on July 19.
“That was another attraction - European qualifiers,” Devine said. “It is great experience and hopefully we can get through to the next stages.”
Devine is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Man United team-mates who have broken into the first team at Old Trafford - Brandon Williams being one. The loan move north of the border will prove beneficial in that quest.
He is well-placed to learn from Perth manager Callum Davidson who enjoyed a successful career playing in the same position.
“A lot of my friends have broken into the first team at such a young age,” Devine said.
“For me, the pathway at the minute is quite stacked. So to come out on loan at a good club, it’s good to get that first team experience.
“Being around the first team environment and first team football is a lot different to reserves. You are playing for the three points every week and it means a lot to the club.
“It’s good to be here. It was quite tough since it was my first day but I’m happy to be here and it was a good session.”
