European elections turnout is UP amid Brexit chaos, initial figures suggest

Turnout is up in the EU elections, initial figures suggest after millions of Brits went to the polls on Thursday.

Many of the first few councils to report turnout today showed an increase compared to the last election in 2014.

It comes after opinion polls suggested Nigel Farage's Brexit Party would be the runaway winners of the elections with more than 30% of the vote.

Some of the most grim opinion polls put Labour in third place and the Tories in fifth, as both main parties take a hit from clear pro- or anti-Brexit parties.

The results will be declared from 10pm on Sunday night.

Regional turnout figures are expected to start becoming available later today or on Sunday.

Among the local turnout figures published so far, Cardiff recorded an increase of nearly 10 percentage points in turnout from 2014: 41.6% (in total) this time as against 31.7% (valid votes cast) five years ago.

Turnout in Wiltshire was announced as 44%, a rise of seven percentage points on the 37% of 2014.

In Durham it was 32.9% (up from 27.6% in 2014), in Cheshire West and Chester 34.9% (31.2% in 2014), Mid Devon 40% (37%), Gloucester 35.3% (34.9%), Cheltenham 43.3% (38.2%) and Hertsmere 36.4% (34.7%).

The 2014 turnout (valid votes cast) across the whole of the UK was 35.4%, ranging from 30.9% in the North East to 51.0% in Northern Ireland.
