European elections results drama as North East Lib Dem candidate is forced to miss count

The European elections results night had some early drama in the North East.

A Liberal Democrat candidate in the region had to give the count in Sunderland a swerve when his wife Hannah went into labour.

Dr Aidan King, who is third on the list for the party in the North East, was due to be at the count in Silksworth but had to divert to the hospital.

The North East Liberal Democrat account posted on Twitter : "All our best wishes to our no 3 candidate Dr Aidan King and his wife Hannah - they are not at the count tonight as Hannah’s waters have broken and she is about to give birth!"

Dr King, an NHS doctor who was born and raised in Newcastle , campaigned on a 'stop Brexit' platform.  

According to his party biography, he "lives in the home he built in the greatest region of the United Kingdom, the North East, with his wife and soon to be two sons.

"He supports Newcastle United and plays 5-a-side footy with old mates on a weekly basis."

According to early forecasts, the Brexit Party is set to win one of three seats in the North East. The others are set to go to Labour and the Lib Dems, according to Britain Elects' projection.
