European elections: Full list of North East candidates and parties standing in EU vote

UK voters will be heading to the polls again on Thursday, May 23.

Elections to the European Parliament will be held across the continent, almost three years on from the referendum vote to leave.

With the House of Commons locked in a state of deadlock over how, when and if Brexit should happen, the country is obliged to hold the vote.

The voting system is a bit more complicated than usual.

Three MEPs represent the North East (which, for this election, stretches from Scotland down to North Yorkshire) so each party puts three candidates forward.

A proportional system is then used to allocate the seats - for example, a party with one third of the vote would get one seat.

Unlike in general elections, you're voting for a party group, not an individual.

The candidates are ranked in order of who'll get elected first - i.e. if a party gets enough votes to get one candidate elected, the person at the top of the party lists below would be the one who would get the job.

Another quirk is that although the vote will be on a Thursday, we won't see the results until Sunday.

You can see a full list of the candidates below and other helpful content in the grid.
