European Election results 2019: How every area of Wales voted as Nigel Farage's Brexit Party dominates

The Brexit Party won an unprecedented triumph for a six-week-old political party in Wales and across the UK on Sunday night in the European Parliament election.

Nigel Farage's party dominated in Wales, winning 32.5% of the vote, two of the nation's four MEPs and coming top in 19 of 22 council areas.

The single-issue party's success came at the expense of both Labour and the Conservatives, both of which suffered historic failures across Wales as the vote totals were annouced.

Plaid Cymru finished in second place in Wales, winning one European Parliament seat with 19.6% of the vote and the party's leader Adam Price declaring that Wales was now a "Remain nation".

Labour, with 15.3% of the vote, only narrowly beat the Liberal Democrats to take the fourth and final Welsh European Parliament seat. The Conservatives, with 6.5% of the vote, only squeaked ahead of the Green Party. It was the Tories' worst result across the UK since 1832 and the party wouldn't have taken a single seat if it was a first-past-the-post election.

The vote share of the parties favouring a second referendum - Plaid, the Lib Dems, Greens and Change UK - was significantly higher at 42.4% in Wales than the parties favouring a hard Brexit - Ukip and the Brexit Party - who won only 35.8% between them.

Nigel Farage, whose party topped the vote across the UK, however said that his new party had succeed for one reason alone: "We voted to leave and we haven’t."

The result in Wales was a significant change on 2014 when Labour won 28.15% of the vote and Ukip 27.55%. Then, the Tories were third with 17.43% and Plaid Cymru came fourth with 15.26%

Turnout across Wales this year was up on 2014 at 37.29%, compared to 32% five years ago.

Wales's MEPs are now Nathan Lee Gill (Brexit Party), James Wells (Brexit Party), Jill Evans (Plaid Cymru) and Jacqueline Jones (Labour).
