A man in Germany has been cautioned by police after he was spotted riding his scooter naked.

The unnamed man was pulled over after he was seen in Brandenburg wearing only his helmet and sandals.

Officers tweeted an image of the man, suggesting he had stripped off because of the hot weather.

Brandenburg Police said they were "speechless" and asked Twitter users to suggest their own captions for the image.

It prompted laughs on social media, with one concerned commenter asking if the man was wearing suncream.

Another added: "Where did he keep his papers?"

While a third suggested the man "wanted to take a short break through the car wash."

Officers agreed when one man said "at least he had a helmet on."

The man was cautioned on Wednesday as temperatures soared across Europe because of a Saharan bubble.

Temperatures reached 38.6C in Coschen, near the Polish border, beating its previous June record.

Police were forced to impose a 120km/h speed limit as road surfaces began to struggle, while rail tracks also buckled further north.

Temperatures could hit 44C in France on Friday, making it the hottest day ever, while Spain faces similarly overwhelming heat.
