Europe's development agencies: mapped

In a new interactive map, aid, development and transparency information is shown for all European countries that are part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's development assistance committee, including Slovenia, its newest member, which joined in December 2013.

The map shows donor governments' priority areas and countries in 2012, and shows how much official development assistance (ODA) they spent as a proportion of their gross national income. These statistics were taken from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development website.

It also shows donors' transparency performance, based on how donors score in Publish What You Fund's aid transparency index, and whether they have signed up and published to the International Aid Transparency Initiative.

PWYF's aid transparency index assesses how transparent the world's major donors are by measuring how much information they've committed to publish about their aid against how much they've actually published. IATI was designed to help make information about aid spending easier to access, use and understand. Donors sign up and publish their aid information to an agreed IATI standard framework, so their citizens and recipients in developing countries can hold them to account for how they use their resources.

Finally, the map also shows how donors score in the latest edition of the Centre for Global Development's commitment to development index. The CDI ranks wealthy governments on how well they live up to their potential to help poor countries. Instead of only looking at aid, the CDI takes into account six other policy areas that affect developing countries: trade, finance, migration, environment, security and technology.
