Geogian authorities say they have made an arrest in the murder of Australian Shanae Brooke (left). (AAP)

A person has been arrested after a Victorian woman was found dead on a hiking track near the Georgian capital Tbilisi, local officials say.

Shanae Edwards, also known as Shanae Brooke, who is originally from Melbourne, had been teaching English in the country for about two years.

The 31-year-old was reported missing on July 30 after failing to return from a hike in Mtatsminda park near Tbilisi.

Georgian authorities said her body was found the following day and launched a criminal investigation into her death.

Local officials said in a statement on Wednesday that a 33-year-old Georgian citizen - named as RM - had been detained for "premeditated murder".

The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs said the suspect was identified as a result of DNA testing.
