Europa League five sub rule approved as UEFA look to ease player workload

Scottish teams in Europe will be able to field five substitutes for the rest of the season.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has confirmed that the law amendment has been passed by the governing body in a bid to ease player workload during the congested campaign.

The season has been made shorter by the coronavirus pandemic that effectively slashed a month off of the calender and could cancel further games.

The SPFL have already agreed to do five subs this season while leagues such as the English Premier League decided against that.

But UEFA have approved it for the Champions League, Europa League and the for international tournaments.

Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen and Motherwell are all in Europa League qualifying action but it would only be in the group stage the five subs would be used.

Ceferin said: "After representations from clubs and national associations the executive committee approved the use of five substitutions in club and international matches for the rest of the season."

The executive committee also approved triple-header international breaks in March and September next year, he said.

The international windows in October and November 2020 had already been extended by one day by FIFA, to allow for three matches to be played by each country instead of two.
