Euromillions rules mean £169m Euromillions prize has to be won tonight

Lottery rules mean the record £169m Euromillions jackpot has to be won tonight, even if no one matches every winning number.

Tonight marks the 22nd time the jackpot has rolled over, but after reaching its 190 million euro cap on September 24 it's not increased in monetary value since then.

This meant the jackpot was capped at £167m, but thanks to a fluctuating exchange rate it's now increased to £169m.

If a single person was to win the jackpot they would be the richest National Lottery winner in history and would be catapulted onto the rich list - reports the Manchester Evening News.

Tonight's jackpot has to be won, because the maximum rollover attempts have been reached, with the entire prize guaranteed to be won by some lucky ticket holders.

If no one matches all of the numbers, because it's the fifth successive draw that wasn't snapped up, the entire prize will then be split between the winners in the next tier.

If there are no players who match five numbers plus one lucky star, the entire amount will again roll down to the next winning tier which is for those who match five numbers.

And so on and so on meaning bigger prizes all round.

As the entire prize has to be given away tonight, on Friday October 11 the jackpot will reset to its starting value of €17m which is around £15m.
