Euromillions lottery winners Colin and Christine Weir revealed as SNP's biggest donors during last decade

Ayrshire lottery winners Christine and Colin Weir have been unveiled as the biggest donors to the SNP during the last decade.

The couple, who hit the Euromillions jackpot in 2011 with a £161 million win, topped the pile of financial backers to the Nationalist cause.

Between them, the pair donated more than £6.4 million to party coffers, according to analysis by the Times.

It came during a period where the SNP fought referendums on Scottish independence and leaving the European Union.

The Weirs jointly donated more than £3.2 million each to the SNP, although neither has given to the party since 2017.

Mr Weir died aged 71 in December following a period of illness.

The couple famously paid £3.5m to buy Troon's Frognal House from local hotelier Bill Costley following their lotto win.

But they took a loss of £1.2m on the property after amicably deciding to split in April last year, following 38 years of marriage.

Mr Weir then moved to Ayr's Doonfoot before passing away at the end of last year.
