Euro 2025 live: Norway defeat hosts Switzerland in thriller after Finland beat 10-player Iceland

Euro 2025 kicks off today in Switzerland, with the tournament braced for a scorching start as England continue their preparations for their opening game against France on Saturday.

The action gets underway later with the first two games from Group A. Unusually, the host nation was not involved in the curtain-raiser, with Finland defeating 10-player Iceland to record their first win at the Euros since 2009. Norway then took down hosts Switzerland in a thrilling second half in Basel, coming behind to win 2-1 at St Jakob-Park.

With Switzerland experiencing a heatwave and heat warnings declared in the country, Uefa have made the decision to relax their rules around fans bringing bottles of water to the stadium for the first couple of days, while players will be allowed cooling breaks if temperatures reach 32C.

The Lionesses arrived in Zurich on Monday and head into the European Championships as the holders, but face a challenging group that includes contenders France, Netherlands and debutants Wales. Follow all the latest news and build-up to Euro 2025 below

Villains Norway spoil Switzerland’s joy in raucous start to Euro 2025

23:01 , Will Castle

From the picture-perfect opening half of Euro 2025 for hosts Switzerland came the rage of Norway, and with it, the fury of St Jakob-Park.

Their thunderous comeback in Basel, and a dizzying couple of minutes where a penalty was awarded both ends, with one missed and the other disallowed, silenced Switzerland’s party, as well as the ear-splitting whistles from the home fans.

As they soaked in the boos at full-time, it was clear Norway were far from popular winners, not least because of the fact that Switzerland had just become the first host nation to lose their Euros opener.

Jamie Braidwood reports from Basel:

CHANCE! Switzerland 1-2 Norway

21:52 , Will Castle

90 mins: Last-ditch defending from Norway!

A cross makes it all the way through to Beney on the edge of the six-yard box, who has the entire goal to aim at. However, Hansen throws her body at it and manages to put in a goal-saving block.

It then falls to Pilgrim who too has her effort blocked by a desperate Norway body.

SEVEN minutes added on, and at the moment, Norway are holding on.

CHANCE! Switzerland 1-2 Norway

21:48 , Will Castle

88 mins: That could’ve put it to bed!

Bizet is playing through and gets it out of her feet quickly to avoid the on-rushing keeper, lofting it beyond Peng.

However, she can only watch it bounce the wrong side of the post and hit the side-netting.

A big let-off for the host nation, who themselves are running out of steam.

CHANCE! Switzerland 1-2 Norway

82 mins: What a golden chance to equalise!

Reuteler is slipped in behind and tries to lift it over the keeper, but she puts too much on it and dinks it onto the roof of the net!

The flag goes up, perhaps acting to spare her blushes - but replays show she was onside. It would’ve counted.

GOAAAAAAAL! Switzerland 1-2 Norway

21:18 , Jamie Braidwood

Oh what a turnaround! Two goals in a couple of minutes from Norway and now they are in front! Norway release Graham Hansen down the left, with Hegerberg bursting through the middle. Graham Hansen put the ball across but Switzerland Julia Stierli diverts the cross into her own net!

GOAAAAAAAL! Switzerland 1-1 Norway

Out of nothing, Norway are level! Vilde Bøe Risa’s corner from the left is powered into the net by captain Ada Hegerberg, who has able to make contact with the header from right in front of the goal-line. Not a great moment for the new Chelsea goalkeeper Peng, who was nowhere. Game on!

Switzerland 1-0 Norway

46 mins: And we are back underway. Should Switzerland get through this and finish the job, the hosts will be dreaming of a historic place in the quarter-finals, which would suddenly became a very realistic possibility.

GOOOOAL! Switzerland 1-0 Norway

LIFT OFF FOR SWITZERLAND! You know, that goal came just as the Swiss fans behind the Norway goal started to jump up and down in unison. Then, as if drawn to the noise, Switzerland played one ball to bypass Norway and were away. Nadine Riesen is there to finish off the move with a low shot that creeps in via the inside of the post!

OFF THE BAR! Switzerland 0-0 Norway

20:26 , Jamie Braidwood

24 mins; Moments keep happening for Switzerland whenever Reuteler can get on the ball and turn... then she lines up a shot from the edge of the box and cracks the underside of the bar! Wow, what a goal that would have been. So close to a sensational opener, and Fiskerstrand may even have got the slightest touch to tip it onto the bar!

Switzerland 0-0 Norway

15 mins: A shot from range from captain Lia Walti and she catches it well... but Fiskerstrand gathers it at her second attempt.

Reuteler then tries her luck with a dipping volley but it’s again straight at Fiskerstrand. Switzerland are creating some moments in this game!

Switzerland ready for 'once-in-a-lifetime' opportunity

19:43 , Jamie Braidwood

Switzerland coach Pia Sundhage urged her players to embrace the opportunity to grow the game as host nation.

"Playing the European Championship is something special," she said. "It's so much more than a football game. Because everything we've done and the federation have done up to now, using fantastic role models, it's a part of the women's football. And we haven't even played a game yet.

"There is one expression I've said many times - embrace the pressure, and it's a privilege to play under pressure. Try to enjoy the moment, because it will never come back, this is a once-in-a-lifetime [opportunity].”

Euro 2025 team guide: Switzerland

19:15 , Jamie Braidwood

The host nation have a golden opportunity to inspire a generation as Switzerland take to the main stage at Euro 2025. This is their third appearance at the Euros and they have yet to emerge from the group stage, so if the Swiss can reach the quarter-finals it is guaranteed to add some excitement, colour and noise to the tournament.

Pia Sundhage, the former head coach of Sweden and the United States, has taken charge of Switzerland at the 65 and will look to use her experience to guide the hosts, with many young players set to shine. While Arsenal’s Lia Walti is the big name and captain, there is a lot of excitement around Barcelona’s 18-year-old forward Sydney Schertenleib.

Euro 2025 team guide: Norway

19:12 , Jamie Braidwood

Two-time European champions Norway (their last title came in 1993) have a score to settle at Euro 2025. Despite a star-studded front-line, they have failed to make it out of the group stages at the last two European Championships, so the pressure is on as they enter Group A as the strongest side and favourites to progress.

Their last Euros was defined by their spectacular 8-0 defeat to England but with stars like Caroline Graham Hansen, Ada Hegerberg, Guro Reiten and Frida Mannum, Norway could be ones to watch for the right reasons in Switzerland. They are managed by Gemma Grainger, the only English coach at Euro 2025.

FULL TIME! Iceland 0-1 Finland

19:08 , Jamie Braidwood

The contrasting emotions at full-time. Both Finland and Iceland knew this game was going to crucial with very little to separate themselves and Switzerland in Group A, and Norway probably the slight favourites.

It is Finland, though, who take all three points. Iceland’s next game is against Switzerland while Finland can approach the Norway match with a bit more comfort.

FULL TIME! Iceland 0-1 Finland

18:59 , Jamie Braidwood

Victory for Finland! They survive a late flurry of Iceland chances to record their first win at the Euros since 2009! Katarina Kosola scored the all important goal, which came after Iceland’s Hilder Antonsdottir was sent off for two bookable offences in quick succession. It’s a blow for Iceland, but a huge result for Finland in Group A.

Iceland 0-1 Finland

18:53 , Jamie Braidwood

90+1 mins: Another chance right at the death for Iceland. Katla Tryggvadóttir is left with some space in the box and gets her shot away through the legs of the defender, but Koivunen has it covered. Into six minutes of added time.

Iceland 0-1 Finland

18:47 , Jamie Braidwood

84 mins: It’s been all Finland since the opening goal, with the 10 players of Iceland struggling to get out. That said, Agla Maraa Albertsdóttir tries her luck after a break downfield, but it’s straight at goalkeeper Anna Koivunen. Time running out for Iceland.

GOOOOAL! Iceland 0-1 Finland

18:33 , Jamie Braidwood

70 mins: We have an opening goal at Euro 2025, and it goes to the 10-player Finland! It had been coming, and Finland’s No 9 Katarina Kosola takes her chance, cutting in from the left, finding some space in the box and firing at goal. The Iceland goalkeeper Rúnarsdóttir got a touch on the shot, and should have done better, but can’t keep it out.

Finland lead.

RED CARD! Iceland 0-0 Finland

18:21 , Will Castle

60 mins: What happened there?!

We were looking at replays for the scramble incident moments earlier, and when we go back to the live pictures, we see Antonsdottir walking off the pitch after being shown red!

Seems like it was two yellow cards in quick succession, with the second coming as she stamped on a Finland ankle late.

Iceland are down to 10.

CHANCE! Iceland 0-0 Finland

18:19 , Will Castle

57 mins: Mad scramble inside the Finland box ends with a penalty shout from Iceland!

It’s a long throw into the area that causes chaos, with keeper Koivunen forced to punch out not once but twice to avoid the ball flying into her own net.

With limbs flying about, there’s a handball shout as Sigurdardottir strikes goalwards - but instead of her arm, it’s the face that Koivisto blocks with, no doubt sparing her side from conceding the opener!

BACK UNDERWAY! Iceland 0-0 Finland

18:06 , Will Castle

We’re off again in Thun.

Big blow for Iceland - Viggosdottir has been replaced at half-time with Heidarsdottir coming on.

We wait to see whether that’s just a precaution or if Iceland could be without their captain for longer than this second half.

HALF-TIME! Iceland 0-0 Finland

17:54 , Will Castle

Nothing to separate the sides after the first half of football at Euro 2025 - and I’m sure we’ll be getting some more entertaining ones as the tournament progresses.

It’s been mostly cagey but we’ve seen the odd chance at both ends, with Katariina Kosola in particular proving a live wire for the more aggressive Finland from the left.

There was a worry for Iceland fans to take away from the past 45 minutes, however - captain and star player Glodís Viggosdottir went down with injury, but has so far managed to battle through.

CLOSE! Iceland 0-0 Finland

17:17 , Will Castle

14 mins: It might be the Iceland faithful making all the noise with their iconic Viking clap, but it’s Finland threatening the most.

Malmo’s Kosola cuts in on the left and fires from range but it goes just over, landing on the roof of the net.

8 mins: First big chance of the afternoon comes Finland’s way, and it’s all the making of Iceland’s defence.

Iceland and Finland 'similar' and depend on team spirit

16:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Iceland captain Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir is one of Europe’s best centre-backs and also skippers her club, Germany giants Bayern Munich.

Appearing in her fourth major tournament, Viggósdóttir believes Iceland and Finland have a lot of similarities, strengthening the idea that anyone can beat anyone in a wide-open Group A.

"In many ways they're similar to us,” she said. “They have a good team; they're a squad that depends on team spirit. They have been working on a possessional game and they've very good at it so it's something we have to be aware of. We'll have to be at our best to win."

Euro 2025 opening ceremony takes place later

In a strange turn of events, the opening ceremony of Euro 2025 will take place after the first match of the tournament, with Finland and Iceland’s match in Thun merely ‘paving the way’ for the curtain-raiser between Switzerland and Norway in Basel.

There will be an opening ceremony at St. Jakob-Park this evening, before hosts Switzerland play their first match of the tournament.

Finland qualified for Euro 2025 by beating Scotland in their two-legged play-off. They reached the semi-finals in 2005 and quarter-finals in 2009, but have not reached the knockout rounds since.

Doing so would be a huge success, they are the lowest-ranked team in Group A and lost all three group games at Euro 2022. Tottenham midfielder Eveliina Summanen is their key player.

After losing all three games in 2022, there is some hope that Iceland can do better this time. Forwards Karólína Lea Vilhjálmsdóttir and Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir can bring pace and directness, which will be key in an open Group A.

Extreme heat warnings extended as Euro 2025 kicks off amid heatwave

Extreme heat warnings in Switzerland have been extended to cover the first three days of Euro 2025 as the tournament kicks off amid scorching temperatures.

Uefa have relaxed security rules around supporters bringing water bottles into stadiums while fan parks will have free sunscreen available ahead of Switzerland’s opening game against Norway in Basel on Wednesday night.

The temperature in Basel is expected to reach 35C on Wednesday, dropping to around 30C by the 9pm local kick-off at St Jakob-Park. The temperature is also expected to be around 30C when Finland and Iceland play in the opening game of the tournament in Thun at 6pm local time.

England won the Euros on home soil in 2022, before reaching the World Cup final the following year, but the pressure will be on when they face France in their opening game on July 5.

Beth Mead said she wants her partner Vivianne Miedema to play well at Euro 2025, just not when the Netherlands striker lines up against England for their Group D match on July 9.

Miedema and Mead began a relationship while they were teammates at Arsenal.

Mead said there was an air of inevitability that England and the Netherlands would be drawn together at the tournament in Switzerland.

"When the draw was made, we both sat there and said 'of course that's happened," Mead saud.

"We're both very, very competitive and professional. We're both excited for the tournament and to be able to play in it again.

"We keep in contact but when it gets closer to our games, we don't talk football whatsoever. Obviously, we want each other to do well but not against each other."

Euro 2025 prize money: How much do teams win round by round?

13:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Euro 2025 will offer record prize money of €41m (£34m) as Uefa confirmed an increase of 156 per cent from Euro 2022, but there remains a significant gap of almost €300m between men’s and women’s European Championships.

Switzerland will stage the 16-team tournament following a record-breaking Euros won by hosts England in 2022, and Uefa are hoping to smash viewership figures and sponsorship revenues amid the wider growth of women’s football in Europe.

The total prize money available to teams at Euro 2022 was €16m, with England taking just over €2m by beating Germany at Wembley. The prize money on offer at Euro 2025 will be more than double what it was three years before, and the champions can win up to €5.1m when performance bonuses are added.

How Euro 2025 could show a distinctive power shift in women’s football

12:35 , Miguel Delaney

As 16 squads travel to Switzerland with hope, amid all of the usual excitement that invigorates any tournament’s giddy build-up, there is an unusual concern well away from Euro 2025. Figures within the American women’s game insist they are worried about a distinctive power shift in terms of playing talent. The States may not be consistently producing the best any more.

While so much of the women’s game is constantly framed by questions about growth, these Euros could genuinely represent a historic landmark; a moment. This could be the summer where Europe finally completes a rise over the USA, as the new centre of power for the women’s game. The matches themselves may well end up as testament to that.

Women’s Euros host cities and towns in Switzerland: Where they are and how to visit

12:05 , Jamie Braidwood

After a three-year wait, the Women’s Euros Championship is back, and this time, Switzerland will be hosting the female football teams in eight different stadiums across the country.

Back in 2022, England hosted the games after a delay due to Covid, seeing the Lionesses win their home tournament for the first time in women’s (and men’s) Euros history.

The 2025 championship will kick off on 2 July in Thun, sitting on the banks of a deep blue lake in the heart of the country, with the final then scheduled on 27 July in Basel, which has just hosted the Eurovision Song Contest.

Throughout the month, matches will be held in some of Switzerland’s most breathtaking destinations, from the chocolate artisan haven of Geneva to the town of Sion tucked away in the Rhone Valley between the snowcapped Swiss Alps.

Lionesses embrace 'healthy competition' for places at Euro 2025

11:05 , Jamie Braidwood

England midfielder Ella Toone believes “healthy competition” within the side can push the Lionesses on to glory at the Euro 2025 this summer.

Sarina Wiegman’s side earned a convincing 7-0 victory over Jamaica in their final game before they aim to defend their European crown in Switzerland starting on Saturday against France.

She told the England website: “It’s nice to send ourselves off to the Euros in that style.

“I’ve waited a while for another goal in an England shirt and two came today, so obviously I’m really happy with that. But overall, the team performance was great and we’re excited now going into the Euros.

“We’ve got a very talented squad, a very exciting group, and for us, we’re going to take each game as it comes, we’re going to step out and give our all as we always do, and hopefully we can make the nation proud.

“There’s so much talent, there’s players who have been to tournaments, players who are going to their first, and no matter what role I have in the tournament I’ll make sure that I give my best for the team – we’ll all be pushing each other and it’s healthy competition.”

France coach quoted Einstein before dropping captain Wendie Renard from Euro 2025 squad

11:02 , Jamie Braidwood

France’s captain Wendie Renard and all-time leading goalscorer Eugenie Le Sommer were dropped by head coach Laurent Bonadei before Euro 2025, leaving Les Bleues without their two most experienced players as they play England, Wales and Netherlands in Group D.

Renard and Le Sommer were left out by Bonadei for France’s Nations League games against Switzerland and Iceland before the Euros and did not return to make his 23-player squad.

Centre-back Renard, 34, has played 168 times for France and captained her country at last summer’s home Olympic Games in France, while Le Sommer has scored a record 94 goals in 200 appearances.

Norway unbothered by heat warnings ahead of Euros opener

Norway's squad will be paying scant attention to the weather when Euro 2025 begins.

Speaking at a press conference in a sweltering room at the St. Jakob-Park stadium ahead of her side's clash with their Swiss hosts on Wednesday evening, Norway coach Gemma Grainger said her side would not be hiding behind the conditions.

"For me, the weather is just how it is - whether it's wind, rain, sun, it's not an excuse, it's just something that you have to get on with. It's the same with the pitch, with the stadium, so for both teams, it's exactly the same," she said.

"Of course, we've had some good strategies to make sure that we can recover well, so that's all in place, but actually, tomorrow night the weather will not be on our minds, it'll be about enjoying this game and making sure that the team can perform."

Chloe Kelly has completed her permanent move to Arsenal after a successful loan spell last season.

The England international, who is currently at Euro 2025 with the Lionesses, spent eight years at the Gunners earlier in her career and rejoined the club in January after being frozen out at Manchester City.

Kelly, 27, rediscovered her form and impressed head coach Renee Slegers, making 13 appearances over the second half of last season and winning the Champions League by helping Arsenal beat Barcelona.

In Lisbon, Kelly credited Arsenal for helping to turn her season around and expressed her gratitude to the club after being in a “dark place”. Kelly left City upon the expiration of her contract and has reportedly signed a three-year deal with Arsenal.

England Women’s Euros squad 2025: Guide to every Lionesses player

09:35 , Jamie Braidwood

A “new” England heads to Switzerland for Euro 2025 look to defend the title they won on home soil three years ago.

There have been plenty of changes and seven players, from 19-year-old striker Michelle Agyemeng to the uncapped 30-year-old goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse, will be taking part in their first major international tournament.

But several winners from Euro 2022 will be back again under Sarina Wiegman, with captain Leah Williamson, Lucy Bronze and Beth Mead bringing the experience and setting the standards as England look to retain their crown.

The two sides of Sarina Wiegman’s approach driving the ‘noise’ around England

For the seven England players enjoying their first ever tournament call-up, there is a new sense of wonder at being part of a team that is a genuine cultural force. A giddy excitement could be sensed around some of the Euro 2025 campaigns, that you can now see all over England.

“Admire England,” one starts, but “Fear the Lionesses.” The campaign goes on to say ,“Chloe’s calm, Kelly’s chaos”, “Leah charms, Williamson commands”.

It might be an apt theme on a few levels, some unintended. Because, when you speak to people around Sarina Wiegman’s camp, there are almost two sides to most discussion around the team.

‘They stole it from us’: How Spain can reclaim their moment after Luis Rubiales scandal

08:10 , Miguel Delaney

When the England team left the pitch after their last match against Spain, a 2-1 comeback defeat in June’s Nations League fixture, there was one overriding feeling in the dressing room. “They’re just so hard to play against”, was one exhausted view.

Spain’s ideology means they’re seen as an almost singular challenge in the women’s game. The England players enjoy the test, admire the players as icons, and know the world champions are the team to beat.

Spanish manager Montse Tome has still rejected the description of favourites, in that way that coaches do to try and get elite teams playing as if they are starting from scratch again. Many of Spain’s world champions would actually like to start from scratch in a different sense. This singular team want their own singular victory, independent of past troubles.

Uefa relaxes stadium rules as heatwave hits Switzerland

07:11 , Jamie Braidwood

Fans will be allowed to bring bottles of water to the stadium for some of the games at the Euro 2025 as a heatwave has sent temperatures in Switzerland to over 30 degrees.

Uefa said on Tuesday that the normally strict security rules would be relaxed to allow fans attending matches on the first three days (July 2, 3 and 4) of Euro 2025 to bring a half-litre plastic or aluminium water bottle into the stadium. No glass bottles will be allowed.

The usual conditions attached to Euro 2025 tickets state that no "bottles, jugs or cans of any kind, as well as other objects made from plastic, glass or any other fragile materials" may be brought into any of the stadiums, with exceptions made for medical containers.

According to meteorological service MeteoSwiss, the temperature in Basel is expected to reach 35 degrees ahead of Switzerland's opening game against Norway on Wednesday evening, with similar temperatures expected throughout the country.

Why chaotic Norway and hosts Switzerland will set the tone for Euro 2025

06:58 , Jamie Braidwood

Norway do not have happy memories of facing the host nation at major tournaments. At the last Euros, they were on the receiving end of the heaviest defeat in the competition’s history, demolished 8-0 by a rampant England. Then, at the last World Cup two years ago, Norway were stunned 1-0 by a plucky New Zealand side, a result that gave way to a disharmonious, chaotic campaign.

So, Norway have plenty to put right when they face hosts Switzerland in Basel on the opening day of Euro 2025.

Group A kicks off Euro 2025 as hosts Switzerland in action

06:57 , Jamie Braidwood

The opening day of Euro 2025 sees Group A in action. Usually, the hosts would play the curtain-raiser, but it is Iceland and Finland who will instead have the honour of playing the opening match of the tournament in Thun.

After that, hosts Switzerland take on dark horses Norway in Basel, in what will be their toughest match of the group stage on paper. Norway have some of the world’s best attacking players, including Barcelona winger Caroline Graham Hansen and Lyon striker Ada Hegerberg, but they have fallen apart spectacularly at the last two major tournaments.

But if things click under English coach Gemma Grainger, they could certainly be ones to watch.
