Euro 2020: Who looks likely to advance from Group A?

The prestigious Euro 2020 tournament is shaping up to be one of the most wide-open in history with several teams looking to send shockwaves across Europe by winning the competition.

This competition is extremely difficult to pick the winner of, with unpredictability beginning in the outcome of the group stages.

One of the hardest to predict on paper is Group A.

Made up of Italy, Switzerland, Wales and Turkey, the group is wide-open and every team believes they are in with a chance of topping the respective table.

Portugal proved in Euro 2016 that form heading into a tournament isn’t the deciding factor, while Turkey will be hoping their recent impressive form is present in the group stages.

So how do the betting markets see this group shaping up and who are the favourites to finish top? Here, Mirror Sport takes a closer look at the betting market:

There isn’t much surprise to see Italy as 8/15 favourites with Grosvenor to top the group, but are their odds justified?

From failing to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2018, Italy have since undergone a rebuild by waving bye to a lot of their old guard while blooding through their youthful assets.

There is still a tinge of experience in the central defensive pairing of Leanardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini, but their squad is now littered with youthful exuberance.

Winger Federico Chiesa, central midfielder Nico Barella and centre back Alessandro Bastoni are now all key components to the national side after impressing for their respective clubs.

Form would suggest that Italy will finish top having won their last six matches without conceding in that time, but other teams will be looking to throw up an unlikely shock to beat the Italians to the summit of the group.

Turkey are primed to have a great tournament while their odds of 27/5 would suggest otherwise.

Finished second in their group behind World Champions France, who they beat 2-0 at home.

Senol Gunes’ side also put four past the Netherlands and three past Germany in recent friendly matches, proving they are capable of causing an upset against Europe's finest.

Going forward, much will be expected of AC Milan playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu and he’ll bid to create chances for Ligue 1 title winner Burak Yilmax. Success will hinge on these two linking up well.
