Archie Gemmill, Kenny Dalglish, Ally McCoist – big heroes for Scotland when it came to competing on the big stage.
But now, 23 years since our last outing at a major tournament, it’s time for new heroes to rise and etch their name in the history books.
Monday marks Scotland’s first match at a major tournament since a 3-0 defeat to Morocco in Saint Etienne at the France '98 World Cup.
And of all the places for Scotland to make their comeback, home soil at Hampden Park is the venue as we host Czech Republic in our Euro 2020 opener.
Steve Clarke’s Tartan Army won’t be able to pack out the stadium to deliver that famous Hampden Roar, with limited capacity due to Covid restrictions.
But the country is right behind our boys - and we’ll even have Lanarkshire lads out there on the pitch.
A new generation will don the Dark Blue and among them are the Wishaw duo of Celtic’s David Turnbull and Motherwell’s Stephen O’Donnell, as well as Muirhouse man and Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney, Blantyre boy and Aberdeen-bound defender Declan Gallagher, plus Hibs striker Kevin Nisbet, who hails from Cambuslang.
With the Group D curtain-raiser fast approaching, Lanarkshire Live Sport editor Paul Thomson is joined by our reporter Euan Robertson and Andy Bargh, the host of the Hampden Roar podcast, to take a closer look at the local stars in the squad and assess Scotland's chances ahead of their upcoming games against the Czechs, England and Croatia.
