Euro 2020: One London couple with split loyalties when England and Czech Republic clash at Wembley

Both sides are guaranteed to progress from Group D

England take on the Czech Republic at Wembley on Tuesday night in a Euro 2020 match which will help decide the outcome of Group D.

While many Londoners will be cheering on the home side, some households are split in their support. Tensions will be high in the Chau home in Greenwich this evening.

Kheng Chau, 43, grew up in south-east London, while his wife Hedvika, 35, was born in Slany near Prague.

The couple will be watching the game together in between putting their two children, aged three and five months, to bed.

Liverpool fan Mr Chau said: "I'll be cheering on England from the sofa. I'm a bit more realistic about England's chances considering the way we've been playing. But if we play really well tonight there could be some anxiety in the house."

The couple met at a martial arts class and have been married five years.

Mrs Chau added: "I don't know how much I'll be able to watch. I get very stressed and will want to win."

The Czechs are just above England in the group on goal difference. A draw would mean England finish second and would face the second-placed team from Group E - Sweden, Slovakia, Spain or Poland - in Copenhagen on Monday. A win for the English would see them play their last-16 match at Wembley on Tuesday against the second place team from Group F, which includes France, Germany or Portugal.

Mr Chau joked: "The ideal result would probably be a draw. Not just for marital bliss but also for who we would face in the upcoming matches."
